Free Government Credit Report

Have you ordered your free government credit report lately? Do you know what your credit score is?

If you haven’t checked your credit report this year – you may be paying hundreds of dollars unnecessarily!

Your credit report is the single most essential document in your financial life! The information in it determines your credit score, which in tern determines the interest rate you pay on your home loan, car loan, credit cards, insurance and much more.

Many people aren’t aware to their rights under the 2003 FACT Act to receive a Free Annual Credit Report – one from each of the 3 major credit bureaus – Equifax, Experian & TransUnion.

You should take advantage of this privilege and order your free government credit report every year to monitor your credit history, check for errors and dispute them.

Why is it so important?
Because a good credit score means lower interest rates, lower monthly payments and thousand of dollars in savings on interest payments.

According to MyFICO.com, a division of Fair Isaac (the creator of the FICO Credit Score)  – each 100 points less on your FICO score will cost you around $110 more per month (A total of $40,000 more over the life of the loan) in excess interest payments on a standard 30-year $300,000 Mortgage.

The same 100 points will cost you around $4,500 more on a %25,000 60-month car loan.

But how will checking my free yearly credit report help?
First – your credit score is based on the information that’s on your credit report. A study released by the US PIRG (Public Interest Research Group) in June 2004 states that up to 79% of the credit reports surveyed contained some kind of error or mistake.

These errors may lower your credit score, costing you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in excess interest rates and payments. A low credit score can also cost you more in insurance or when renting a home. If you have a low credit score you may be declined of a loan or a credit card, and may even fail to get a job!

The good news is that the 2003 FACT Act has set up a mechanism for disputing any errors or incomplete information that you find on your credit report.
